Caribbean nations reacted angrily to the suggestion that their pro-whaling votes at the annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in St Kitts were motivated by a desire to win aid from Japan. On 19 June pro-whaling countries won their first vote towards the resumption of commercial whaling in 20 years. The resolution, which passed with 33 votes to 32 with one abstention, was tabled by the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).
